Five for Friday, August 28

Well, I survived my first week in the empty nest and I’m here to tell the tale. Which is: The nest is very quiet.  And, for the most part, it remains clean from one day to the next. (I’ll admit, this is not an entirely terrible thing.)

Here are this week’s Five for Friday: five links to edifying, amusing, or uplifting reading material that will hold you over until Monday.  Enjoy this last weekend of August! In the immortal words of R.E.M., September’s coming soon.

1. If the university that your child is attending reports zero sexual assaults on campus, that’s a bad sign.

2. Did you know this past Wednesday was Women’s Equality Day? Probably not. But here are profiles of 9 awesome women who fought for the rights we take for granted today.

3. Do you use some kind of fitness tracker to help you manage your health? I do–but after reading this author’s essay on why she’s breaking up with fitness tracking software, I’m rethinking my relationship with my Fitbit.

4. I know it’s not even quite September, but it’s almost pumpkin season. Here are 10 things to do with canned pumpkin, when the times comes.

5. And finally: substitute “Some Kind of Wonderful” for #5 and “The Lost Boys” for #8, and I can get totally on board with this list of 10 Movies This Child of the 80’s Wants Her Kids to Watch.
